[at-l] cistern at Fullhardt Knob Shelter

If you agree & have the time a letter sent to Pat Egan at <pegan@fs.fed.us>
could assist in keeping this water source for hikers for years to come.
Thanks

>We need your input on the cistern at Fullhardt Knob Shelter. RATC is split

>The other group wants to save the cistern and willing to do work to keep
>the cistern on good working order. I am a part of that group.

>The cistern has been cleaned and repaired by a group of RATC members with

>Dear Pat Egan,
>
>As hikers and frequent users of the Appalachian Trail, we hope that you
>will take in the following considerations in regard to the Fullhardt Knob
>Shelter cistern:
>
>First, and foremost, Appalachian Trail hikers through the years have come
>to expect a water source close to shelters, and the cistern provides the
>only water anywhere near Fullhardt Knob. It would create an
>inconvenience--and a burden--if the cistern was not there. In addition,
>hikers have become accustomed to treating water sources in recent years
>and, if a signed were posted as it should be, they would treat the cistern
>water.
>
>Secondly, the Fullhardt Knob Shelter cistern is the very last one of what
>used to be a string of cisterns along the trailís full length. We feel
>very strongly that this makes it a unique cultural and historical asset
>that should not be lost, and certainly worth preserving if at all possible.
>
>Finally, we recognize the implementation of stricter regulations
>concerning backcountry water sources in the past few years. However, we
>believe that if the cistern is maintained and cared for properly that it
>can meet those regulations. Therefore, we will make arrangements for
>volunteers to visit the shelter and cistern on a periodic basis to be see
>if it is functioning properly. A sample would be tested to see if it still
>meets standards. This, of course, would not preclude posting a sign that
>the water should be treated before using.
>
>We thank you for your time and consideration of this matter and hope that
>the Fullhardt Knob Shelter cistern can be preserved in working order.
>
>Happy trails,
