Most ski areas now have baskets or containers or racks where one can store 
equipment, skiis, bags, and other personal belongings.  They charge $2 - $5 
per day with unlimited access to you stuff.  Some one could makes some money 
offering such a service at trail days.  It would require a person to be on 
duty 24 hours a day to watch the gear.  Could be stored in a large truck, 
school bus,  large tent with temporary wooden rack.  It could make a great 
fund raiser with a practical service to the hiking community and it would 
discourage that unpleasant part of large gatherings.
