I carry a cellphone when I hike with the Scouts and have found that, at least with my phone, I have no signal for most of the trails in Georgia - until I get to the tops of the mountains. However, satellite-based GSM phones are eventually going to become more prevalent and cheap. These phones are already the standard in Europe and will give you coverage no matter where you are. Charles
