My dad used to raise bird dogs.  At least once a summer a dog would find a
rattlesnake or adder and get bitten.   Most dogs only got bit once but we
had one that was bitten at least 5 times in her lifetime.  Poor doggie.  Her
head would swell up and she'd slobber everywhere for a few days.

We had a horse apparently get snakebit last year.  From the
location of the wound we think he lay down on it.  Sadly
I don't think he's smart enough to have learned to check
the ground before flopping.
