At his funeral, one of John's best friends who was on the US Nordic
National Team said that one of the great things he learned from John was
that it was the journey that counted the most, not winning.

I have found that very often, what one learns from the 'journey' of
athletic competition is the importance of teamwork; that quality focused
training makes one able to perform better in other endeavors. I've also
learned first hand an awareness of the frailty of the human body as well as
its resilience; and the amazing beauty, interrelatedness and complexity of
all of God's creation.
