Hayes was a great coach, but he did not control his temper in public.
He had a habit of mixing it up with reporters, some of whom no doubt
pushed matters just because of that. But the fans were willing to
forgive some broken cameras because he was Woody Hayes, Head Coach of
the Ohio State Buckeyes.

I do not doubt that in private he was, as you say, a fine man. But he
needed to learn control, and he did not. The fans did not help. Even at
the end, when there was no question about his actions, there were some
who argued that what he did wasn't wrong.

It's unfortunate that his career ended the way it did.
