I agree that any responsible hiker carries the essentials when they hike and 
item 2 or 3 on every list I've ever seen is a "map and a compass and the 
knowledge to use them."

There's another plus for section hikers (I only have to carry the first two 
AT maps and I'm taking my guide book too).
