Re[4]: [at-l] Baxter vs AT

"...It's too late to compromise, the shelters were removed two months ago!"

But they are being rebuilt at Katahdin Stream, which in many ways is a better
location. Katahdin Stream hikers are far more atuned to thru hiking than
 typical Daicey Pond clientel.

The problem as I see it is not shelter space, but the decision by the park not
to allow adjacent camping when the shelters are full. The problem will be
especially acute for those thru hikers finishing in August when regular
campsites tend to be uniformly full.

After the first few days of September, usually a vacancy can be found in the
regular campgrounds, Katahdin Stream and Abol, to handle any thru hiker
  overflow.

But wise thru hikers will time their ascents of Katahdin for midweek if
possible, when they are more likely to find a camping spot and thus avoid
   end of hike hassles.
