[at-l] Katahdin/Baxter 2002 Update
Baxter State Park takes reservations for the upcoming season starting
January
2nd. There's a big scene at Headquarters that day, as over one hundred folks
line up to make in-person reservations. The 'choice' spots, cabins, and dates
go quick. You can postmarkmark mail-orders after Christmas. Reservations by
mail are processed as soon as the hubbub subsides.
Overnight camping season starts on Weds, May 15th. Katahdin may or may not be
open, but there'll be MEGAs in Baxter that weekend anyhoo!
Katahdin Stream Campground has tent sites, lean-tos and walk-in tent sites.
Tent site #16 is the most northern campsite on the AT, and tent site #19 is
the most private at KSC. The walk-ins of tent sites 1-2-3 and lean-tos 24-25
are nice, and keep you away from the noisey car campers. I suggest putting
'I'll take anything on this date' on your request in case your location
choice has been taken.
B.S.P. now has an 'official' web site:
http://www.baxterstateparkauthority.com/
There are maps of the campgrounds, and detailed rez info, but note that the
Daicey Pond AT lean-tos have been removed. The new lean-tos will be just
south of Katahdin Stream Campground.
This is the best site I know of, put up by a retired Park Ranger:

Shelters/Lean-tos & Tenting spaces are $6 per person, minimum $12 per site.
Enclose a self-addressed legal size stamped envelope.

It costs an out-of-stater $8 at the gate to drive in.
I'll be up camping by Hurd Brook on January 5th and 6th, and in Millinocket
on Monday the 7th to make my reservations for 'opening weekend', a visit with
the kids in June, the meteor shower in August, and a backcountry walkabout in
September. Anyone want to meet for lunch at the AT Cafe on the 7th?

"Man is born to die, his works are short lived.
Buildings crumble, monuments decay,
Wealth vanishes.
But Katahdin in all its glory,
Forever shall remain the Mountain of the
People of Maine."
