I haven't see the film yet... but...

Ron says (about the elf with Frodo before Rivendell):

"Um, that wasn't Legolas. It was another elf, who remained in Rivendell.
(I can't look up his name at the moment since the books are in the
bedroom with Peggy, and she's asleep...)"

His name was Glorfindel.  For anyone really into LOTR he shares the name
with an elf who fought the Battle of Fornost and was slain at the fall of
Gondolin... however some argue that he is the same elf, returned to Middle
Earth from the Halls of waiting - one of the highly debated topics among
Tolkien aficionados.  But none of this info is in the trilogy.. it's all in
Tolkiens notes and in the Peoples of Middle Earth writings.
