"...Every five or so years, we have to replace our mailbox because some yahoo
hit it with a baseball bat," says Kahley.

I solved the baseball bat problem once by buying a large mailbox and inserting a
smaller doorless old mailbox inside and filling the gap between the two with
concrete. It worked for a while. But it finally succumbed to a snow plow.

But the memory lingers on. No one has tried to whack my mailbox since, though
some of my neighbors have been attacked.

Vandals shall always be with us and the damage they cause extends far beyond the
initial destruction as I learn more and more each year.
