Depends on where you are and what you want it for. On the AT the things isn't really that useful
except for the fun of it. You'll get a real good idea (as long as you keep it reasonably calibrated)
of just how much climbing and descending you have done and how much you have left to do. But, as a
navigation aid the altimeter isn't needed. There are places where it can be quite helpful thoough -
if you do a lot of alpine hiking where weather can get nasty (white out) it is quite helpful as a
locating tool. You can get a sense of what weather is coming in with the barometer and that can be
useful too.

By the way, a GPS altimeter function while potetnially more accurate has limitations too. That
features of GPS only works if you can get 4 or more signals from satilites which happens less often
than getting the basic 3 our need for a position fix. It is also limited in accuracy.
