Re[2]: [at-l] Deer hunting on the trail

"...Somehow, folk who are familiar with, and therefore comfortable with, some
activity (such as driving) are not effected by the dangers and the every day
stupidly around them and their activity, yet they react otherwise about/to an
activity they are not involved in regularly -- be it flying, hunting, or even
solo hiking," says Chainsaw.

And he's absolutely right. However, the reaction of
the news media is a mixed bag.

An automobile death usually warrants only a few graffs in most newspapers.
(Television is different. Auto deaths are cheap to cover. Amateurs tend to
send in the needed video tapes and are paid peanuts for their efforts. If it
  bleeds, it leads)

But newspapers, that will devoted a single graf to an ATV or snow mobile
death, will send a team of photographers and reporters and banner a hikers
death across front pages. Tv largely ignores trail deaths. They have neither
the time nor money (well they have money, but the owners prefer to divide it
among themselves rather than hiring news staff capable of walking) to walk
  trails.

Yes. This is a generalization. But it is mostly true.
