I actually went to the Forest Service headquarters here to ask about this
and was told that the hikers could even hunt ON the trail in GA.  I was
shocked as I always thought it was a 2 mile rule.  The hunting days are
really weird too, so you had better check before you hike.  I didn't check
before one of my last hikes and got so scared with the shooting all around
that I went home!  Never again will I go without checking.
