[at-l] thru-hike budget

I would personally go with more than that I would say 2.0-2.5 per mile.
unless you have gear backups at home. if you buy gear along the way it can
be expensive no price shopping just get it when you can find it. ymmv

in 2000 I did a small 700 mile section (I was attempting all 2160+ of it)
took me 3 months and about 2000 dollars. which is 2.8 per mile.

don't go all worried yet. it took me 3 months to do 700 miles so I was
going VERY slow(should have been done 1080 miles or so). I started up north
I hear it is MUCH more expensive in the north then it is in the south. I was
also buying all my supplies on route. no mail drops. all things that I hear
make it more expensive. after that three months I needed a new pack
desperately(it was used to begin with and to big) and needed to buy boots
once on route(100 bucks). and I lost my tarp(or it was stolen?? still a
mystery to me I am mostly anal about my gear placement so I still don't know
how I lost it) so I needed a new one of them. all in all I needed about a
600 dollar spot of gear to continue. (I was buying on route and just buying
the closest thing I could get to what I wanted when I could find it and that
is very expensive) I have since at home refurbished my gear over a time,
price shopping, and looking for sales at 150 bucks but on route I estimate
it would have been 600 dollars or so. again ymmv

hope this helps
