Hmm, I hate to step into this and point out the
obvious, but you should have just deleted Red's post,
since you obviously didn't like it. Or at least
responded privately, and not subjected us to your
offensiveness.

I delete most of the stuff that is posted to this list
lately. I hate to do it because, like Red, I have
found a lot of friends on this list--good friends.
That's why I keep coming back, even though I have
signed off several times in the last year because all
the personal attacks and "pissiness" as Sloetoe calls
it, really get me stressed, and I have enough
non-hiking-related stress in my life. It's not that I
don't care about the trail or the issues surrounding
it, it's just that my purpose in being on this list is
more to have the camaraderie of my list friends and to
give/take the occasional advice about the trail and
hiking when I can.

Because I'm deleting so much stuff, though, I end up
missing some good posts--like Worm's post about his
AAA card--but luckily POG forwards them to me. :)

If you want to debate on this list, then debate. Good
debates are interesting to read, and I think we can
all learn from them. Insulting personal attacks on
people, however, are not fun to read, and no one
learns anything. In fact, they are offensive to many.
The profanity is offensive as well. Why do people have
to resort to this on a mailing list? Someone asked how
old we are, and I have marveled at how some adults can
act so immature. A lot of us are "kids at heart," and
proud of it (me included!), but there is a difference
between that and acting childish. Grow up!

The cool thing about this list is that it can be warm
and fuzzy, as well as providing a medium for those who
want (and have the computer time) to get deeply
involved in debating real trail issues. Why can't we
use the list as such, and not as a medium for personal
attacks?
