I agree with your analysis, and have been a fan of alcohol gel hand
sanitizers for some time.

I thought you might like to know that, at least when I bought it last year,
the "Target" house brand was unscented as well as being cheap.  Most of the
varieties, including Purell, have some scent added.  I think I saw another
unscented brand at one point, but I don't remember the name.

I also filter my water, but have switched to the one liter "Safewater
Anywhere" squeeze bottle filter because it is so convenient.  The filter has
worked very well for me (max trip length 12 days, clean water).
