When I started bpking in 1958 I used a pack frame with no pack.  I just 
spiderhitched everything to the woodframe and shouldered the 60+ lb load with 
no waistbelt.  I Couldn't do that today.  I probably couldn't get the 60 lbs 
off of the ground.
