Besides, if he wants to really make any money as a musician, he needs to
have some kind of "reputation". How much do you pay an ordinary tuba
player? But PR people in orchestras could really drum up some business with
a "guest tuba artist who hikes", or whatever. Besides, if he teaches, kids
will flock to his lessons knowing that playing the tuba isn't the end of his
world. I met him at The Gathering and really liked him. He seemed sincere.
He was nice to people. He had all the proper attributes for a fine young
