I bought some 1/2 inch nylon (polypropylene, I believe) rope that is the
typical three strand braided, but very, very soft. I spliced an eye loop
into each of two 15 foot lengths, and then tied off the opposite ends with a
back splice. To use, I simply wrap the rope around the tree, pass it through
the eye and then make a bowline know an appropriate distance down the length
of rope, to support the hammock. A bowline will come undone very easily in
the morning, but absolutely will knot slip or come undone in the night. By
simply looping around the tree, you can adjust the height as necessary, but
once you put some weight in the hammock, it tightens right up and stays in
place. I have tried this setup on many different types of trees, from young
maples, with soft tender bark, to white birch, and have found absolutely no
damage of any sort.

of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece,
but to skid broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out,
shouting "GERONIMO".
