[at-l] Whites Redux

Okay, please pick this apart:
Fr - 8/31 - Drive from Northern Virginia starting at noon
Sa - 9/1 - Park Liberty Spring Trailhead
- hike to Garfield Ridge CS: 10.3m 4600" climb (oooff!)
Su - 9/2 - hike to Zealand Falls Hut: 9.7m 1400' climb
Mo - 9/3 - hike to Mizpah Hut: 14.1m 2600' climb
Tu - 9/4 - hike to Madison Hut: 11.8m 1300' climb
We - 9/5 - hike to Carter Notch Hut: 13.7m 2100' climb
Th - 9/6 - hike to US 2: 15.2m 2300' climb
- relax in Gorham fleshpots or camp at Rattle River
Fr - 9/7 - 9:20 AM - shuttle from Gorham Irving Station on
Pinkham AM shuttle
10:30 AM - transfer at Crawford Depot VC to
Crawford AM shuttle
12:05 PM - Arrive at Liberty Spring Trailhead
- Long, maybe 2 day drive home to Fairfax
(or maybe I will take one of you up on your kind offer of possible
shuttles - I would love to meet more of you in person)
I would carry my 2 pound silnylon tent and a 25 degree bag. I don't feel
that safe hiking that long even with huts without a bag and tent. I will
take fleece (I always take a hat and poly gloves, even in summer). Say,
16 pounds dry total.
I will take minimal food, say a 1st night din at Garfield Ridge CS and
one emergency din which I would use if I camped at Imp, plus snacks.
Maybe another 5 pounds, losing 2 the first night.
I realize I could possibly get sick of the hut culture, but the
logistics are too attractive.
The Zealand to Mizpah day looks rough: 14 miles, 2600 feet. The last day
over Wildcat at 15m/2300' to Imp or Rattle River looks hard, although
once over Mt Moriah I would have the powerful Gorham gravity to pull me
in. The first day of 4600' looks impossible, but it is only 10 miles and
I have done close to 6000' feet in a day up Snowbird and Roan. And the
next day (9.7m/1400') should be relatively easy.
Is all this doable? How can I break it into smaller chunks and still
only use 1 week?
- Gary from Fairfax
PS: Special thanks to Mrs Gorp (who introduced me to blackflies), Felix,
Sly, Stitches, Rev Rusty (I'm using the jpeg as my current screensaver)
and TJ - you guys are great to help me out!
