Re: [at-l] Wussy Ankles

I've suspected that this is similar to the old high top v. low top PF
Flyers controversy of a few decades back. I am not sure there is any
real additional support from the higher topped boots, as I managed to
turn an ankle at least once every other day on a walk. Usually, this is
due to loose footing rather than my weakness. I suspect the idea of
high top boots lies in:
 1) a myth/desire for better ankle support,
 2) keeping rocks, rain and snakes out of our ankles,
 3) and tradition/fashion. (What looks better than a hikerbabe with
great looking boots?)

I've walked a few miles in my low top Hy-Teks. I don't think they are
as durable or comfortable as my Vasque Clarions. The ultra light folks
like several trail running shoes. The 803's (?) seem to get the most
general kudos. I suspect rain and water is the enemy of low tops, with
more room for error in high tops.

I am trying hard to find a way to connect this to Florida and the
election to get it back on political topic. I couldn't do it. Drat.
