(CNN) -- Texas Gov. George W. Bush has been elected the next president of the 
United States, CNN estimates. 

Bush gained the necessary electoral votes for victory by winning Florida. CNN 
named him the estimated victor at approximately 1:20 a.m. EST today. 
With 97 percent of the vote in early this morning, Bush had a lead of 
approximately 50,000 votes in Florida out of more than 5 million cast.
