Re: [at-l] Snow Camping on Silar's Bald

That would make some sense with road access fairly close north and south.
Silar's Bald (assuming we are talking Nantahalla's and not the similarly
named bald in the Smokies) is beautiful, exposed and probably one of the
all time great places for sledding. The shelter area is lower, has
excellent water, but is quite a climb out. The road access north is
probably the closest, and least threatening to kids.

Wayah Bald just north of there may be equally good. The forest service road
to it is probably accessible year round. Road access is a problem with
either the road out of Franklin to the FS road, or the road into
Burningtown Gap. The old stone fire tower would be a great feature, with
good water at the campsites north of the tower.

Yet, another option would be south into the Standing Indian area, although
the FS roads will be closed and locked. Access would be somewhat close on
the road up to Deep Gap or the road and backcountry parking area near
Standing Indian State Park.

But I'd bet on Silar's bald.
