Very very few new backpackers will be able to responsibly start out as a
lightweight hiker.  However, reading the gurus and thinking it through for
yourself will help keep the weight and cost down.

Additionally, I've been to both Blacksburg stores.  They are typical
everything-outdoors-for-the-college-kid stores w/o the experienced long
distance hiker focus that you need.

If you can, take a trip to a real trail town outfitter.

Although he is dated on specific equipment Colin Fletcher is a good source
of advice for a newbie.
