I tend to agree with Mara, and I apologize if my message read as a
suggestion to go "ultralight" right off the bat.  It wasn't meant to be.  I
do think that familiarizing yourself with ultralight ideas/techniques is a
good idea, if only as a counterbalance to the dominant "outfitter" culture.
If you aren't familiar with other techniques it's easy to get the idea that
there is only one (heavy and expensive) way to gear up for a backpacking
trip!

In the end, only you can decide what you are comfortable with.
