[at-l] those little radios

SANDY, Oregon (AP) -- A seven-year-old boy with a walkie-talkie is being called a hero.

Fletcher Wold was playing with his brother on a hill near their home in Sandy, Oregon, when they heard a voice crackling over their radio. It turned out to be from one of two injured mountain climbers stranded on Mount Hood.

Fletcher ran to tell his father, who got in touch with authorities.

The two climbers were found alive and are now in fair condition.

The boys got the walkie-talkies for Christmas so their father could keep in touch with them when they were playing in the woods nearby.

The walkie-talkies have only a two-mile range. But from high up on Mount Hood, with no obstructions, signals from the climbers' radios could reach even farther.
