[at-l] HATT2000 available sections...



The 17 available sections for HATT2000 (Hands Across The Trail 2000 - Labor
Day Weekend 2000 - http://friends.backcountry.net/hatt/) are:

Section 4B - VA ROUTE 624 south to FOREST SERVICE ROAD 156 - start near
Catawba VA - includes Dragons Tooth, Audie Murphy Monument, and Sarver
Cabin...

Section 4E -  PARKERS GAP ROAD north to LITTLE IRISH CREEK - start along the
Blue Ridge Parkway - includes Apple Orchard Mountain, The Guillotine, and
the James River...

Section 5A - SIMMONS GAP south to ROCKFISH GAP - the Southern third of
Shenandoah National Park...

Section 7D - DUNCANNON north to SWATARA GAP - start by shaking hands with
Kahley in Duncannon PA - includes the wonderful ridgeline walking (and rocks
and boulders) of Pennsylvania...

Section 8C - LAKES ROAD south to WALLKILL ROAD - start in New York and head
back to New Jersey - includes some wonderful rock hopping, the new Pochuck
Quagmire boardwalk, and the "Bridge to Nowhere"...

Section 10B - ARLINGTON-W WARDSBORO ROAD north to MAD TOM NOTCH - start your
hike by shaking hands with me Pittsburgh, and finish by shaking  hands with
Mrs. Gorp - in between, you will hike over Stratton Mountain, around
Stratton Pond, past Manchester Center, and over Bromley Mountain...

These next 3 sections are in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.  The
mileages have been reduced in these sections because of how rugged the trail
is here.  There are wilderness huts and shelters/tentsites available along
these sections.  If you would like one of these sections, please call the
AMC now to see about reserving space in the huts...

Section 10H - FRANCONIA NOTCH north to CRAWFORD NOTCH
Section 10J - PINKHAM NOTCH south to CRAWFORD NOTCH
Section 10K - PINKHAM NOTCH north to HOGAN ROAD

Section 11A - GRAFTON NOTCH south to HOGAN ROAD - this is arguably the most
rugged section of the entire Appalachian Trail - you'll start with a climb
over Old Speck, then a dive down Mahoosuc Arm, then navigate Mahoosuc Notch,
then Fulling Mill Mountain, Goose Eye, Mount Carlo, and Mount Success - it
all settles down a bit as you approach Gorham NH...

Section 11C - CARIBOU VALLEY ROAD south to ME ROUTE 17 - Caribou Valley
Road, near Stratton ME, has been improved to the point that you can drive
right to the trail - climb Sugarloaf Mountain, Spalding Mountain, skirt Mout
Abraham, tackle Saddleback Mountain, and finish with Bemis, Elephant and Old
Blue Mountains...

Section 11E - MOXIE POND south to LONG FALLS DAM ROAD - this sections
includes the Kennebec River canoe crossing...

Section 11F - MOXIE POND north to ME ROUTE 15 - a remote section of the
trail that will get you to Monson ME...

The next 4 sections are in the 100 mile wilderness, plus 20 additional miles
to Mount Katahdin.  The "wilderness" is on private timber company lands that
are criss-crossed with logging roads, thus providing access to the trail.
This is a spectacular and remote section of the Appalachian Trail...

Section 11G - W BRANCH PLEASANT RIVER south to ME ROUTE 15
Section 11H - W BRANCH PLEASANT RIVER north to JO-MARY ROAD
Section 11J - POLLYWOG STREAM south to JO-MARY ROAD
Section 11K - POLLYWOG STREAM north to MOUNT KATAHDIN
