The red wolves had been transferred to Alligator River Nat'l Wildlife
Refuge, where they have been somewhat successfull in establishing
themselves.

If you go to the Outer Banks, you can team up with Wildlife personnel who
conduct "howling safaris" into the refuge.  Basically, you can go stand in
the woods and howl and the wolves howl back.  (This is at some distance; you
can't see the wolves.)  You will, however, probably slap a LOT of mosquitos.
