Re: [at-l] Long Trail

You should be aware that the Green Mountain Club discourages hiking on the
LT during mud season. This occurs whenever the Spring thaws make the trail
soft and muddy. Most of the damage caused by hikers during mud season is due
to their unwillingness to walk in the deep mud. This can cause widening, and
erosion that is virtually irrepairable.

In the end it is a judgement call on the part of the hiker. Please excercise
good common sense. If the season is wet, stay off the trail until it dries
out. Your actions affect all those that come after you.

Fall is the best season anywhere in New England, with September being the
best of all possible worlds. The nights are cool, the days not too short,
the leaves are turning. I suggest a section on the northern half of the
trail. Try to include Camel's Hump if you can. Mansfield is nice, but don't
feel like you have to go there. Mt. Belvidere is also lovely. In fact
Belvidere to the Canadian border would be a wonderful fall section hike.
