As stated, hikers who plan to combine a fall hike of Katahdin "with
camping" should plan on hiking Katahdin by Oct 15th. The Park rules clearly
state that camping ends Oct 15th. You can believe that, because it's true.
The Park remains open to day-hiking until winter season (Dec 1 thru April 1)
begins. You might find the perimeter road open as far as Katahdin Stream, or
at least Abol campground until Nov. 1st. This past Fall found the AT
section from Katahdin Stream to the tableland closed the first week of
October. Thruhikers had to skip this portion of the AT and try to make their
way to Baxter peak via the Abol Trail. Yes, you can summit Katahdin after the
15th, conditions permitting, just don't plan on camping inside Baxter, having
the AT open, or having the above treeline trails open.
