The law requires "proper food storage". Between Forrester Pass and Glen
Pass this means bear canisters or bear boxs. East of Kearsarge Pass it is
bear canisters. Just exactly what the NPS and USFS means past that is
somewhat murky. However, it does not mean leaving food in your pack or in
your tent or out where a bear can get it. The reason I know this was
because the camper at Center Basin last year [the incident that led to the
special rules about that area] was "cited" for improper food storage for
storing his food in his pack in his tent.

If someone asks for clarification [tempting] the answer may not be a
lenient as the current intrepretation. Currently the rule seems to be in
practice: If I [the ranger] comes by and finds unattended food OR you lose
food to a bear you get cited.

The law is: The NPS/USFS can make whatever rule they want whenever they
want it. Are you suprised ?? ((: [When has it been any different]
