Do you normally hike with a hydration bladder? Then you need to put one in. Otherwise, skip it for time being in a hommemade pack my 2 cents.
If your pack is well constructed you shouldn't need lots internal type c. straps for trail hiking. Maybe 1 or 2  be useful if you want the pack for weekends and expeditions both.

Panel loader. That's one of the good things about external frames.
I have a long side pocket in mine for poles and maps that balances the shorter pockets on the other side. If the poles are superlong or heavy, strap them vertically to the back. Big poles are a bitch anyplace, the best you can hope for them to not fall off, hang you up, or tip you over. Hope this helps. What is the fabric you are using? What is an Adventure 16?       A.
