[pct-l] Where to carry bearcan

Hi!  I'm a lurker who's going to be on the JMT soon.  Reading all of the
discussions about bears, I've decided to use a bear can.  One question,
though: is it OK to carry the bearcan (Garcia) inside my pack?

I carried a bearcan inside my pack during a recent trip to Big Bend, TX,
with no problem.  However the bears at Big Bend (had a mother & cub cross
the trail about 20yds in front of us -- they acted somewhat indifferent...)
don't appear to be anywhere near as smart or aggressive as those on the JMT.
I can't remember if we were down/upwind of the bears -- that didn't
even cross our minds at the time!
