You've really thought this one through, haven't you BJ? <grin> You seem to
have covered all the possibilities ... well, except for one. 

What if "the bear" eats the goat whom you've relied on for your entire trip?

But ... don't worry, there is a solution to even this problem: you get this
rather large bear canister and you ... well, you get the idea. 

Let's just say that you "secure the goat each night."  BTW, counterbalance is
probably not a good idea in this case.
