I, personally, didn't have any problems with bears north of Tuolumne either.
In fact, I went from Tahoe to Whitney and only saw one bear - and that was near
Cathedral Lakes, south of Tuolumne.

Supposedly, a ranger told me last year at the top of Bond Pass(northern
boundary of Yosemite), that they capture the "trouble" bears and relocate them
in the northern areas of Yosemite.  But we never even saw any bear scat around
there.
