Re: [pct-l] LNT update

I think that if one is truely concerned about leaving no trace, then one
should just not go into the wilderness at all to began with. It is an
illusion to believe that one changes nothing in passing; and I truely
wonder about telling anybody else(who must just be too careless, or
unthinking, or unintelligent) what they should do in the form of 6
principles or l5 messages or whatever codified form you feel others should
learn

I feel that people can be responsible for themselves, and that they do not
necessarily need a "missionary" telling them what to think and do.

I have a diploma for the LEAVE NO TRACE program, and am qualified as a
trainer, and it says right on my diploma that it is for outdoor skills and
ETHICS. I feel that Ethics are a matter of personal choice, and that it
may be best for each to ponder in our own way how to Save the world and how
to go and live as gently as possible in the wilderness.

"Principles and messages" have a habit of becoming rules and regulations.
The LNT "principles" have already made their way into the Park service and
Forest Service speak, and have been endorsed verbatim in their publications
and propaganda. All rules have exceptions and if carried to extremes are
unworkable and often counterproductive(burning toliet paper anybody?).
Missionaries rarely give the back side of the issue on their spiel; LNT is
no exception. LNT needs to exist in LOs Angeles if anywhere, where the guy
that sleeps on rocks in the wilderness(durable surface), goes home and
takes a shower every day, and drives 40 miles back and forth from work
every day. LNT allows people to compartmentalize their responsibility for
ethics and the environment.

Peace,
Goforth
