Hello Dave -

Thanks, Dave...they are the same posts I was referring to.

I intended the "absolutely nothing" quote to be an "attention grabber" and
"thought provoker"...I have to admit that it never crossed my mind that it
would (or could) be thought of as "Nazi dogma" <g>.

I am quite willing to stand behind the quote. If I am only one tenth the
debater that others have been on this subject, I should have no problem
showing how virtually any item brought into the backcountry (and left) can
be shown to somehow do damage...if done over and over and over.

As a reminder, we need to look at an associated quote from "LNT 7":

>Remember the context...nothing we do is unique...whatever we do has
>probably been done MANY times in the past and will most likely be done
>MANY times in the future. We are not talking about me bringing in and
>leaving one teabag here...we are talking about me, and you, and you,
>and you (and on and on...) each leaving a teabag (or two...or ten).
>How many orphan teabags does it take for it to become obvious (to even
>the most obtuse of us <g>) that all these teabags ARE somehow damaging
>the ecosystem they were dumped in?

This forum is of interest to both horsepackers and backpackers, so pick
some item that either would be likely to try to dispose of by leaving in
the backcountry. I will see if I can show how it would do harm if enough
of that item got left at one time or another. If I can't, I will appeal to
the list for help <g>.

I don't claim that every item will do great harm...just that each item will
do at least "some" harm. The whole point is that even the little
itty-bitty harms can (and will!) add up to a great harm at some level of
occurrence. We can only control the one time that WE do the itty-bitty
harm...we have no control over all the other times that others do (or have
done) the exact same thing!

Or...if you don't want to mess with it, just forget the "almost nothing"
quote completely and tell me what you thought about the other ideas put
forth in the 15 LNT messages. Believe me, the overall LNT message is WAY
to important to be discounted completely just because I was not a good
enough writer to keep any single part from sounding strange to the reader.

Thanks...I am having a nice weekend...sametoya!

- Charlie II
