A very informative post.  My worst nightmare is to be awakened by the  
smell of smoke in the middle of a moonless night to find that I can  
see nothing, have no idea where the fire might be and have brought  
along no weenies.  Yikes!

That almost exact thing happened to me but it was in the morning and I woke to the very strong smell of smoke.  This was a few years ago and a summer for lots of fires up here in Sections O, P, Q.  I was not far north of Carter Meadows. There was another hiker as concerned as I and the best we could do was guess where it was coming from and watch the direction of the smoke.  It turned out the smoke was from a fire quite a safe distance away but it sure catch my attention.
