[pct-l] Superior Nutrition

Hello Ajax

The Oasis topic was introduced by me, Chance, to a question by Mountain Goat. He has not responded so I assume he is not interested.

With your background in this sort of thing you no doubt well understand the promise that super foods hold for improving the range and performance of long distance hiking.

I have seen dramatic results in my hiking endurance and overall levels of health from using the Oasis line of products and as a 2006 PCT thru-hiker I will be discussing these products with interested fellow hikers just as I discussed earlier nutritional products on my previous two hikes of the PCT.

The difference now is that with my very satisfied customer base among sedentary folk, I will be paid to hike and for other thru-hikers who are interested in the Oasis product line, the opportunity exists for them to develop a business with Oasis and get paid to hike as well.

I had thought that this would help answer two questions that hikers are constantly asking and getting precious few answers to: how do I improve my trail diet and how do I sustain my hike?

The nutritional marketplace is filled to overflowing with superlative promises and lousy products. I fully support your concerns and encourage you to continue to question the claims of the of Oasis line of products. However, I would ask you to become better informed about it by reading the Metabolic Plan by Stephen Cherniske, a bio chemist working in the sports medicine field, who developed the formulas and later brought them to the level of peer review science.

I would also remind you that these products are backed by a lifetime customer guarantee which, so far as I know, is not offered by any food or nutritional products company anywhere. That alone indicates that something special is happening here.

I have a bit of a background in this sort of thing and it looks like crap to me. Granted, I did not read the entire website, but my comments here are based on what I did see.

First of all, this is NOT a food, it looks to me like these products are herbs/extracts/vitamins, etc etc, which are intended as supplements. Don't get excited thinking that we've stumbled upon a ultralight ultra-nutritious food supply here.

Second, the website has loads of fancy words and indications that this stuff will make you feel better in all sorts of ways (all of which are quite subjective and hard to measure). In reality these are nutritional supplements are not regulated by the FDA, which means they do not have to provide data that supports their claims in any way.

They do mention that they have done clinical studies, but one of the studies mentioned had 144 subjects, and another had 31 EMPLOYEES of Oasis. This is far below the "pharmaceutical level," where thousands of patients are often involved. They make no mention of whether these studies were conducted according to current industry clinical standards.

This stuff may work just as well as other nutritional supplements, or even better, I don't know. I would be willing to bet that a healthy diet and lifestyle without supplements like this would work at least as well also. Thru-hikers get relatively little in the way of fruits & vegetables, so this sort of thing may help in that area. I just saw the claims & wanted the buyer to beware.

And one other bone to pick, I hope we don't see solicitations of this kind on the list again.
