[pct-l] Snow Conditions North Cascades (Washington)

Hello Everyone...

I just returned from two very lovely days in the North Cascades, hiking both North and South from Rainy Pass. The purpose of the trip was to a) check snow conditions and b) to get in some conditioning and shake out the PCT gear.

Here are my findings regarding snow conditions.
The south facing slopes above 6,000 feet are mostly clear up to 6,500. At about 6,100 ft the north facing slopes are still holding 3-4 feet of snow.

The trail to Cutthroat Pass disappears around 6,100 feet. I spent way too much time postholing up to my hips in soft snow. I reached 6,350 and decided that I had achieved my objective to check snow conditions. So, I turned around and headed south on the PCT.

There is NO snow south of Rainy Pass to Stehekin (I'm assuming all the way to Stehekin, although I didn't get quite that far)

HYOH of course, but I guess would have to recommend that anyone heading southbound
next week be prepared for navigating in the snow and some route finding issues. I would bring an ice axe, as the hillsides are steep to navigate without a trail. I would say that gaiters are a must have, as I was completely soaked from the knee down.

It was hot today (near 90 degrees) so the snow will be melting fast... how fast? That is anyone's guess.

Happy hiking!
Terri
