[pct-l] GPS, is it worth it?

Scott
I'd say it depends on the unit your using, a Gecko while a fine unit doesn't have maps, there for you need to be able to transfer what the GPS is telling you onto a map. I personally use a Garmin GPSmap76CS

This can best be accomplished by using UTM an a (UTM) Grid Reader, $6.00 REI Item 641456, this will get you pretty close, just be aware the line showing the trail is frequently incorrect on many maps especially the PCT in SoCal.

One thing that would help is pre-existing waypoints, which I have, these I have personally verified and are not based on guess work. They are based on the Y2K edition of the PCT Databook and onsite verification, I also have numerious waypoints <> each Y2K mile.

Let me know off-list if you want them

if you do use a GPS be certian to have - AT LEAST - 2 spare sets of new batteries

Cheers

Being in a snow covered wilderness you've never seen before can be a bit
daunting. Knowing how to use a map and compass is a must.

With that said, you certainly won't need a gps, not on this trail. A compass,
decent skills and sense of adventure is more than enough.
