[pct-l] Trolls (was: thru-hiking with dogs)

Well, I have to thank Brick Robbins for educating me, so it's my turn to pass it on. Simply, trolls like to create arguments. They can do it with flame wars and inflammatory statements. The arguments are one thing, but in the extreme the real threat is that lists can literally be polluted by a troll -- the atmosphere and desirability of a belonging to list ruined and shut down. There is documented history of this happening on lists similar to ours.

It's the job of the list managers to manage just that type of occurrence. When someone is obviously trying to start arguments, the managers sometimes have to step in and kick that person or persons off the list. They also give guidance or discourage discussions that range too far off topic. The PCT-L managers have been very judicious in this regard (many thanks to our unseen heros).

I had no idea that this sort of thing existed, and especially wouldn't have expected it amoung a hiker list, until I got sucked into responding to just such an inflammatory statement. It didn't take long before I realized that the person who'd thrown the flame was relishing the ire they'd raised, and continued to make argumentive, assinine statements that drew me and other reasonable souls out.

Anyway, be on the lookout for ridiculously stupid comments, or statements begging argument too readily. Don't feed the troll what they want, and that is your response, and as many others as they can get.

Donna,
Educate me. What is trolling and what is the point of it?
 Just curious...
