[pct-l] Silverwood Lake is Open

Yes, this is true.

Pete Fish reported last year that there was significant landslide/washout of the PCT that they have been working to repair at Cleghorn Ridge, requiring heavy equipment and complete reconstruction. There is a way around it on a road walk, from what I understand, but many of the hikers chose to scramble up the rather steep slope where the washout occurred. That steep uphill scramble is what is not advisable for horses.

The heavy rains we've received have apparently caused a good deal of damage to the Trail. The first reports from Billy Goat indicate that the trail has sustained sigificant damage erosion damage in Section D, north of us. He also indicated that getting to the trail from the roads that intersect it has been difficult or impossible due to all of the washouts and road closures.

Every year is unique, and this one remarkably so.

Is this statement on their page inaccurate?

"Pacific Crest Trail is open in the park segment for through foot and horse
traffic. HORSES ARE NOT RECOMMENDED north of Hwy 138 to the foot of the Dam.
Restrooms, water and camp facilities are not available in the Park."

Hi all:

Silverwood Lake Recreational Area, between Big bear City and Wrightwood, is
open and the PCT is ready for hikers. The park has a PCT campsite, water,
and restrooms. The Marina restaurant will be open for thru-hikers by late
April. See http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=650 for details.

There was a lot of confusion in '04 about the PCT and the Silverwood Lake
area. It was severely damaged by fire earlier in 2004 and some thought the
PCT was closed in this area (it wasn't).
