[pct-l] Flying from Vancouver to So. Cal

The passport is for returning into the USA. There is no one to check your
credentials when you enter Canada. And, from my experience, Canadian
officials don't check when entering from the US. The whole checking passport
problem depends on the US Border Guard and his state of mind at that
particular moment. Their state of mind changed significantly after July 2002
when the US gov't tightened up border security. We encountered 2 guards in
Sept 2002 that I am sure would have given us a real bad time, but when they
asked for passports we produced them. They still hassled us. We recently
heard that you don't want to mention Mexico to the border guards. Just tell
them you hiked into Canada and are returning. The word "Mexico" seems to be
a trigger.

YMMV

I live in Ohio and have visited Canada frequently and I have never even
heard of anyone ever getting a passport to visit Canada.
