No one "needs" any technology when hiking. If someone thinks they "need" any tech when hiking you won't find them hiking because hiking is the last thing they want to do.

Though, some may on occasion for specific purposes "want" some tech. An astronomer might want some state of the art telescope equipment, but usually high tech telescopes aren't needed and are inferior. Though, a radio or cell phone could come in handy. Though, if I took a cel phone hiking it'd be for emergencies only. When hiking, talking on a phone or being reachable by phone is the last thing I want, it defeats the purpose of hiking. If a person can't do without a cel phone it is doubful they would enjoy hiking to begin with.
