It is one of the simplest fishing setups. A line is tied to a stick, 
traditionally a bamboo pole or anything available. Bamboo is nice, because 
it is tapered and elastic. It is easier and more forgiving to hook a fish 
if your "stick" has spring-like qualities. In the US the term "pole 
fishing" draws images of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer. In Europe - and I read 
also Japan - modern graphite poles of up to 30ft length are commonly used.
