I hiked the AT from Springer to Davenport Gap (about 220-230 miles)
before
heading out to the kickoff. You don't have to do 20 miles days on the
AT and it
is a good chance to make sure all your gear is working to your
satisfaction.
There are several good outfitters on the southern part of the trail so
you
have an opportunity to swap out gear also (Neels Gap, NOC, Gatlinburg,
Hot Springs).
