I've never used pepper spray on anything or anyone, thankfully.  But here's
a link to some info on pepper spray and it's effectiveness in brown
(grizzly) bears encounters.

The article includes some interesting research suggesting that bears are
actually attracted to pepper spray residue.  Big surprise!
