[pct-l] Scout Merit Badge Hikes

I'm thinking this is probably getting way off thread, but will answer the
questions posed. Further debate might be more appropriate on
rec.scouting.usa .

> In my opinion for scouts earning any merit badge requireing physical
> endurance should earn the rank of 1st class scout.

There are two conflicting issues here in practice. First, Scouts should
generally earn 1st class before spending time on merit badges. First class
teaches all the BASIC outdoor skills. Second, if an opportunity comes up to
earn a merit badge, take it even if not first class, if otherwise
appropriate.

> Then again in my opinion they
> should earn the first aid and swimming merit badges so "if" something goes
wrong on
> an outing they have a little physical and mental maturity behind them.

Generally a good idea, but not "required." First aid IS a part of all the
outdoor merit badges, including hiking. These merit badges are important,
and I have required them on high level outings when appropriate, but this is
my opinion.
